Cape with forest and floral-inspired embroidery motifs

Johanne Blacksmith

Johanne was a young child when she learned traditional sewing techniques from her mother. At the age of 18, she took courses, specializing in leather work and fine embroidery. Today, she excels in sewing and embroidery and works with leather, porcupine quills, and beads. Exhibiting her work professionally since 1999, Johanne has gained recognition and visibility. She enjoys much success selling her products in festivals and Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal events.

Description

(2004) Cotton, suede, embroidery.
Johanne's work is infused with her calm determination and perfect craftsmanship. She explores the Amerindian world with delicacy and skill, apt descriptions of that very world and of the artist herself. Ancestral ways of life were a source of inspiration as she ventured into the world of clothing design. Her symbolic identity design and contemporary floral embroidery which she created during these workshops have the ability to plunge us into an imaginary world, tinged with romance and solemnity. These qualities, evident in the piece of clothing she has designed, lead us to glimpse the rich heritage she has proudly succeeded in adding a contemporary touch to, without, however, altering its essence.
