Johanne Lachapelle

Johanne has worked regularly at the Musée des Abénakis since the age of 15, immersing herself in Abénakis culture and identity. She has even restored beaded clothing from the Museum's collection. In 1966, she founded the art company, Sibsis (little bird), with her husband, originally from Bolivia. She specializes in contemporary basket works and constantly perfects her basketry techniques with her mother and aunt. Johanne is presently studying in administration.

Description

(2006) Black ash, dyed hemp cord.
The mother, Dolorès, claimed her daughter had never wanted to learn basketry, had never shown any interest. The daughter, Johanne, stated that her mother had never had the patience to teach her. It took the Material Design and Culture workshop to create that bond, to provide a meeting place where each participant feels valued and receives the transmission of knowledge through their individual creations. The first basket Johanne made has undeniable artistic qualities: the proportions, the rhythmic pattern, the insertion of a strikingly contrasting coloured synthetic cord together all succeed in lending this voluminous storage basket a delicate quality.
